Re: [oc] linux xilinx webpack programming

I have gotten so far as to install and set up wine, and install ISE5.2.
However, when I run xilinx tools from the command line, nothing
happens -- it does find the xilinx executables, but just doesn't do anything:

thawkins@sparky thawkins $ wine xst
thawkins@sparky thawkins $ wine asdf
/usr/lib/wine/bin/wine: cannot find 'asdf'

The setup has got to be very close because I am able to launch other windows
apps, like notepad; just not the xilinx tools. Here's what I've done to get to this point:

1. Download and install wine. Gentoo Linux makes this easy:

  # emerge wine

2. Create a wine configuration directory (this might get created the
   first time you run wine -- I can't remember):

  $ mkdir /home/thawkins/.wine

3. Edit/create the wine config file (.wine/config).
   The important stuff are the drives and the basic config parameters, such as Path.
   Here is my config file (sorry for the length):

******** File Start ********
WINE REGISTRY Version 2
;; All keys relative to \\Machine\\Software\\Wine\\Wine\\Config

;; If you think it is necessary to show others your complete config for a
;; bug report, filter out empty lines and comments with
;; grep -v "^;" ~/.wine/config | grep '.'
;;
;; MS-DOS drives configuration
;;
;; Each section has the following format:
;; [Drive X]
;; "Path"="xxx" (Unix path for drive root)
;; "Type"="xxx" (supported types are 'floppy', 'hd', 'cdrom' and 'network')
;; "Label"="xxx" (drive label, at most 11 characters)
;; "Serial"="xxx" (serial number, 8 characters hexadecimal number)
;; "Filesystem"="xxx" (supported types are 'msdos'/'dos'/'fat', 'win95'/'vfat', 'unix')
;; This is the FS Wine is supposed to emulate on a certain
;;   directory structure.
;;   Recommended:
;;   - "win95" for ext2fs, VFAT and FAT32
;; - "msdos" for FAT16 (ugly, upgrading to VFAT driver strongly recommended)
;; DON'T use "unix" unless you intend to port programs using Winelib !
;; "Device"="/dev/xx" (only if you want to allow raw device access)

4. Create 2 environment variables. I put the following in my .bashrc:

  #Xilinx
  export XILINX="c:\\Xilinx"
  export XIL_LINUX_WINE=1

5. Create the following directories:

  # mkdir /opt/xilinx
  # mkdir /opt/xilinx/windows
  # mkdir /opt/xilinx/windows/system

6. Copy NETAPI32.DLL and NETBIOS.DLL from a Win98 system to /opt/xilinx/windows/system.
   Note: Must be Win98. Win2000 DLLs does not work.
   A google search got me to a page where I could download these.

7. Copy NOTEPAD.EXE to /opt/xilinx/windows. Test wine with notepad.
   It might take awhile for notepad to come up the first time.

  $ wine NOTEPAD.EXE

8. I installed ISE5.2 from the CDs. This creates and populates the
   /opt/xilinx/Xilinx directory, which is equivalent to C:\\Xilinx
   on windows.

  # cd /mnt/cdrom
  # wine setup.exe

   If you don't have the CDs, create /opt/xilinx/Xilinx manually
   and move the Xilinx goods into it.

9. This should be all you have to do -- at least that's what xilinx claims.
   If anyone can figure out how to proceed from here, please let me know.

Linux users only need the command line verions of XST and the PAR tools.
I heard a rumor Xilinx has announce direct Linux versions by this fall.

Why does it take so long? Why didn't they run their none-GUI code
through gcc years ago?

Anyway, hope this helps.

Regards,
Tom
