Indeed you might need a DAC for the real thing. However a quick and 
dirty solution might be found in the schematic for the XSBoard from Xess 
(http://www.xess.com).

It uses a simple resistor network as a DAC. They really made a mess of 
it as it does not work very well, but you will get the idea. Just for 
the record, they are charging you $175 if you want to buy an XSBoard, 
but it's not really worth it. :)
