well how big?  going for something hd44780 compatible would be ambitious but
useful, a smaller one to provide status output would still be useful but
easier.  In that case you just need to cycle through x-y style outputs
reversing drive polarity.

The hd44780 emulation would be good to have but I am not sure that much
effort is warranted.
