I'm not sure it it is relevant, but there is an set
of XML elements called the "Dublin Core" which is
specifically aimed at keeping track of "metadata"
(such as author, versions, dates, ...)  I gather
is is a defacto standard (though cannot say so
definitively, as I am not an XML expert).
