Step 2: Define Items to be Installed

In this step, you will list the items you placed in the working directory in "Step 1: Provide Product Details" and provide installation instructions for each item.

Note: SmartUpdate Builder is case sensitive. Type the names of all files and directories accurately, observing capitalization.

  1. Click Add to add a new item to be installed to the list in the left pane.
  2. The properties of the selected item appear in the right pane.

  3. Type the name of the item in the Item Name field.
  4. Type the same name used in the working directory.

  5. Specify whether the selected item is a directory, a single file, or an executable.
  6. If you select executable, skip to step 6, below.

  7. From the "Install to" drop-down list, choose a target directory for the currently selected item.
  8. The current target directory shows the default that you chose in Step 1: Provide Product Details. Modify this target directory only if you want to install the selected item in a different location on the user’s hard drive. For a descriptive list of the target directories, see Appendix D in the Mission Control Administrator's Guide.

  9. Type a target subdirectory for the selected item, which will be located under the target directory you chose in step 4.
  10. Do not type any preceding slashes.

If the subdirectory already exists, the JAR you create will install files into that subdirectory. If the subdirectory is new, the JAR will create it for you. Leave this area blank if you do not want to install the item in a subdirectory. For example, if the chosen target directory is NetHelp, you can type "My Product" to install the item to C:\Program Files\Netscape\Communicator\Program\NetHelp\My Product on Windows.

  11. Choose the selected item's platform from the "Install on" drop-down list.
  12. The platform defaults to Windows if you chose the executable option in step 3, above. An executable can only be run on one platform. If you do not want to have Windows as the platform, you must select another one from the drop-down list.

  13. Click Show Advanced Properties to modify the registry, alter version information, or specify when you want to force an install (when the install is launched by a trigger script).
  14. Unless you are an advanced user, Netscape recommends that you accept the default information provided. For more information on alternate uses of the registry, see SmartUpdate Developer's Guide.

  15. Click Submit Changes to apply your changes to the "Items to be Installed" list.
  16. You must click Submit Changes before the information is applied to the item in the list. If you click Next, move to another item, or save the information file before applying your changes, you will be prompted to click Submit Changes.

  17. If you want to remove an item from the list of items to be installed, select the item and click Delete.
  18. Click Next when you have finished adding and removing items.
  19. Note: If you haven’t clicked Submit, you can reset all of the fields for the currently selected item to their original values by clicking Reset Form.
