PLIP is the fastest by far, over the 200Kbps. Compare
this with normal SLIP/PPP comunications running at
38400/57600 or maximum 115200 bauds. Maximum PLIP
speed is rated arround 1Mbps, depending basically on
the computer hardware (cpu, port, etc.) plus the
cable quality and its length. I use the special
PLIP-compatible cable that came with some ancient
Laplink software.

The bad news is that while plip is available for
Linux, Minix and DOS... a Windows version has never
been developed. From the plip linux mini-howto:

| 10. PLIP between Linux and Windows 95.
|
| This section is empty. I use windows 95 for nothing
| serious but games,so I don't try and don't care
| about a PLIP link with Linux. The questions about
| such a link have won the most asked question
| contest, so I give here a (so far) definitive
| answer.
|
| No, so far nobody reported me a successful link
| between Linux and Windows 95. if somebody succeds
| in setting up this link, please let me know
| immediately: thousand of PLIP users await these
| news!

Also note that the old 486 may have an old UART with a
14.4Kbuad max.

Why not just get a pair of used ethernet cards? Olds
ones can be found for low cost. Lots are supported
under linux and most under windows. For dual boot, a
non-PNP unit is simplier to use.

I am messing with an old laptop that has no PCMCIA or
USB and PLIP is fine for connecting to the server. My
next thing will probably be to find an inexpensive
parrallel port ethernet adapter supported by linux.
They will not support 100Mbs hubs but I have a
ethernet switch for the network.
