I have done essentially what you want to do. I am running a 486-120, with a
1 Gb Hard Drive (partitioned into small partitions for experimental
reasons).
I am running with a 2Mb Paradise video card, and a high resolution Panasonic
monitor. I am running a modified muLinux in SVGA mode at 1280 x 1024
resolution, 256 colours. It looks superb !
First, you will have to obtain an SVGA server (XF86_SVGA), the one in
muLinux is only VGA. Put the SVGA server into /usr/X11R6/bin. Then change
the link X@ to point to the new server XF86_SVGA.
Make sure your video card is at least 1 Mb, and your monitor able to handle
the higher resolution.
For your information I used the following workaround to get muLinux to work
with SVGA server and PS/2 mouse.
1. In order to invoke the PS/2 mouse, I included "xf86config" in
"startx". This of course sets up muLinux to work with VGA server, but does
get the mouse functional.
2. The next line of "startx" copies the XF86Config I really want to use
from "/etc/X11", thus overwriting the one just created by the muLinux
"xf86config". The lines in "startx" look like:
xf86config
cp /etc/X11/XF86Config /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XF86Config
3. I used the XF86_SVGA server from Redhat, and Redhat's "xf86config"
which I renamed to "xf86configure". Using "xf86configure" I can now
create XF86Config independently from muLinux's "xf86config".
I now have a version of muLinux, running SVGA at 1024 x 768, 256 colours and
it occupies
only 9Mb. Not a very aesthetically appealing approach, but it works !
