=Pkg: LegaSynth 0.4.1 0.jacklab.1 i586
=Sum: LegaSynth is an old chip/synthethizer emulator
+Des:
LegaSynth is an old chip/synthethizer emulator. It currently uses the ALSA
sequencer API, but could easily be expanded to use others as well. LegaSynth
supports OSS/JACK wave output drivers.

Current engines proovide very precise emulation of:
 * Yamaha DX7 FM
 * MOS6581 Sound Interface Device (or best known as the good old C64 SID :)
 * Yamaha YMH2K (Soundchip very popular in small Yamaha keyboards/Arcades and
   the Sega GENESIS)

LegaSynth Programming Framework:

LegaSynth is also a very powerful synthethizer programming framework, where,
with only a few lines of code you can have your own engine.
A simple demo engine and some documentation are aviable within the
documentation directory /usr/share/doc/packages/LegaSynth.

The difference between LegaSynth and other programs such as Reaktor or Bristol,
is that here the engines have to be actually programmed :).
LegaSynth proovides you with:
 * Midi Driver Handling.
 * Midi Event Handling.
 * Voice Parameters Handling: You don't need to parse/write specific midi
bank/controller/pitch/key code, legasynth takes care of all that.
 * Smart "Voice" base class: Your voice is notified of noteon/noteoff, and then
asked to mix into a buffer, at mix time you retrieve the frequency/volume
and run your code. If you think the note finished its job, just change the
   status to "dead"
 * Voice Allocation: LegaSynth does all voice allocation/handling job.
 * Bank/Patch/Drums Config: Simply let LegaSynth know about what parameters
does your voice use, and with simply that, LegaSynth will be able to create
midi patches, banks, drumsets, an interface to configure patches, and
ability of loading/saving them to disk.
 * Effect Buffers: Voices can be Chorused/Reverbed, and will soon use custom
   output plugins.
 * Wave Output: LegaSynth supports OSS/ALSA and JACK drivers.

=Pkg: brutefir 1.0f 0.jacklab.1 i586
=Sum: BruteFIR is a software convolution engine
+Des:
BruteFIR is a software convolution engine, a program for applying long FIR
filters to multi-channel digital audio, either offline or in realtime. Its
basic operation is specified through a configuration file, and filters,
attenuation and delay can be changed in runtime through a simple command line
interface. The FIR filter algorithm used is an optimised frequency domain
algorithm, partly implemented in hand-coded assembler, thus throughput is
extremely high. In realtime, a standard computer can typically run more than
10 channels with more than 60000 filter taps each.

Through its highly modular design, things like adaptive filtering, signal
generators and sample I/O are easily added, extended and modified, without the
need to alter the program itself.

BruteFIR is free and open-source.
It is licensed through the GNU General Public License

but also common operations that programmers need, such as bitwise
operations, bitwise shifting, and base-2 logarithm and exponents, and
numeric conversion between hexadecimal, octal, binary, and decimal.

The FOX Calculator implements correct operator precedences, so expressions
like 2+3*5 yield the correct result, which is 17, and not 25.
Also featured is a constant memory, which permanently stores its value even
if you exit the calculator and restart it later.

+Des:
This is the first release of a voice controlled, resonator based instrument
for the jack-audio-connection-kit. Playing it the first time it reminded me
to the sound and playing technique of a didgeridoo. Thats the reason for its
name.

Requirements:
- A microphone with near fields characteristics for instrument control.
- A headphone to avoid feedback.
- The jack-audio-connection-kit.
- A i586 compatible system running Linux.

The instrument has one build in 'default' setting. Please use this setting
as a starting point for your own experiments to get somewhat familiar with
its usage. Please be careful when playing it at the corner of non-linearity
as the sound may break out quite loud on crossing the limit border.
Please do first adjust your microphones recording level according to the
default setting before you change any instrument settings.

=Pkg: ghostess 20050916 0.jacklab.1 i586
=Sum: A GUI host for DSSI plugins
+Des:
This assumes you are familiar with jack-dssi-host. ghostess and jack-dssi-host
both descended from the same dssi_example_host source, and in many ways are
still very similar.

A summary of the differences (as of 2005/4/11):
  * ghostess is GPL, jack-dssi-host is BSD-ish.

  * ghostess uses GNU autotools.
Use the usual './configure && make && make install' to build.

  * ghostess has a simple GTK+ GUI. Click on the 'UI' button for any instance
to launch or hide its UI. Right-click on the 'UI' button for more options.

  * ghostess comes with a minimal universal DSSI GUI (installed as
/usr/bin/ghostess_universal_gui) that can be used with any DSSI or
LADSPA plugin. It does not read RDF files or instantiate the plugin, so
it's not as full-featured as a universal GUI could be, but it does allow
for adjusting DSSI/LADSPA ports, selecting bank and program (for plugins
with select_program()), and sending test notes (for plugins with any of the
    run_synth() functions).

If ghostess cannot find a UI for a plugin, and the universal GUI is in the
    PATH, ghostess will launch it.

  * ghostess allows specification of the MIDI channel for each plugin instance,
allowing layering of multiple synths per channel.

  * ghostess allows specification of initial configure, program, and port
    values from the command line.

  * ghostess tracks configure items set on startup or sent by plugin UIs.

  * ghostess, through its 'Save Configuration...' menu option, can save the
current configuration of its plugins. Basically, it just writes a Bourne
shell script that can be used to start a (mostly) identical session.

  * ghostess creates a separate MIDI reception thread, and makes it
low-priority SCHED_FIFO if possible (ALSA-only, at the moment).

  * ghostess has a (clumsy but functional) CoreMIDI driver, allowing its use on
    Mac OS X.

  * ghostess double-forks its plugin UIs, putting them in separate process
groups, and it does not SIGHUP everything on shutdown.
jack-dssi-host keeps the UIs in its process group, and SIGHUPs them all as
it exits (Linux-only, at the moment).

  * jack-dssi-host uses dual gettimeofday()s in the MIDI and audio process
threads to do event dejittering, which seems expensive. ghostess uses
jack_frame_time() and jack_last_frame_time(). This means ghostess needs
    JACK 0.99.0 or newer.

  * ghostess uses the LADSPA plugin Label and port Names when creating JACK
port names, hopefully resulting in short-but-useful port names.

  * unlike jack-dssi-host, ghostess will not automatically load a plugin if it
is invoked without arguments via a symlink of the same name as the plugin.

  * ghostess passes the JACK audio input buffers directly to plugins,
eliminating a memcpy() that jack-dssi-host does.

  * jack-dssi-host includes ~/.dssi in its default for DSSI_PATH, ghostess does
    not.

+Des:
jack_snapshot - a little tool for storing/restoring jack connection states.
It does this by writing/reading the names of the connected ports into/from a
simple textfile. and here is also one weakness: some jack clients don't use
the same jack name on each run, but dynamically assign one (like meterbridge)
but most of them can be told to use a specific name, so this isn't really a
problem. at least not for me. Some pattern matching might be added in the
future..

=Pkg: linuxsampler 0.3.3 0.jacklab.cvs20060602 i586
=Sum: LinuxSampler - modular, streaming capable sampler
+Des:
LinuxSampler is a work in progress. The goal is to produce a free, open source
pure software audio sampler with professional grade features, comparable to
both hardware and commercial Windows/Mac software samplers and to introduce new
features not yet available by any other sampler in the world.

LinuxSampler was designed as a sampler backend, decoupled from any user
interface. It provides a network interface using an ASCII based protocol called
LSCP for full control of the sampler like for setup and altering sampler
sessions. But don't be afraid, with QSampler we already have a convenient GUI
frontend (based on the cross-platform GUI library Qt) for LinuxSampler and due
to the decoupled design you can even control the sampler with the GUI frontend
from another computer, probably even running another OS like Windows or OSX.
Beside our own custom network control layer we planned to add existing ones as
well (e.g. OSC). With the planned SMP and cluster support LinuxSampler might
become a standard for high-end studios and concerts.

It is planned to support all common sampler formats in LinuxSampler, but at the
moment we chose to concentrate on the Gigasampler format, because we think it's
currently the best sampler format in regards of quality and power, especially
for the synthesis of natural instruments like pianos, brass and bowed
instruments.
But we already made good advance in implementing this format, so we are
optimistic to start with adding other formats soon. Beside that we also planned
to design our own, sophisticated sampler format to introduce a more powerful
and more flexible sampler format compared to any sampler format currently
available in the world. Be encouraged to share your ideas about such a new
format with us!

Netjack is a Realtime Audio Transport over a generic IP Network. It is fully integrated into JACK.

When you transport Audio Signals over a Network, you will always have the problem, that two Computers are bound to two different Sample Clocks.
The other Network Transports face the Problem of compensating for the drift between these Sample Clocks.
This is very hard to do.

NetJack works around this problem, by syncing all Clients to one Soundcard.
So there will be no resampling or glitches in the whole network.
As long as there is no packet loss. Packet loss can not be compensated.

=Pkg: soundtank 1.0.2 0.jacklab.1 i586
=Sum: Soundtank hosts LADSPA plugins in "realtime objects"
+Des:
Soundtank hosts LADSPA plugins in "realtime objects" which embody the structure
of the audio signal flow. RTObjects can be controlled in a completely
customizeable fashion using MIDI events sent through the ALSA sequencer
interface. Soundtank outputs audio through ALSA or JACK.

Inside Soundtank, objects are organized in Signal Paths, which are ordered
lists of other objects. The order of objects in a Signal Path is the order in
which they are processed. A signal path in soundtank is similar to a directory
in the Unix filesystem. Channels in the path carry the audio signal between its
member objects.

Soundtank is similar to the Unix shell, it gives you a command-line where you
enter commands. Most Unix shell commands have an equivalent in Soundtank. If
you know the Unix shell, then you already have a good idea about how to use
Soundtank.

=Sum: SoundTouch is an audio processing library
+Des:
SoundTouch is a LGPL-licensed open-source audio processing library for
changing the Tempo, Pitch and Playback Rates of audio streams or files:

 * Tempo (time-stretch): Changes the sound to play at faster or slower
speed than original, without affecting the sound pitch.
 * Pitch (key) : Changes the sound pitch or key, without affecting the
   sound tempo or speed.
 * Playback Rate : Changes both the sound tempo and pitch, as if an LP
disc was played at wrong RPM rate.

The SoundTouch library is suited for application developers writing sound
processing tools that require tempo/pitch control functionality, or just
for playing around with the sound effects.

The SoundTouch library source kit includes an example utility SoundStretch
which allows processing .wav audio files from a command-line interface.

=Pkg: tap-reverbed r0 0.jacklab.2 i586
=Sum: TAP Reverb Editor - An interactive tool for room acoustics simulation
+Des:
TAP Reverb Editor is the standalone JACK counterpart of the LADSPA plugin
TAP Reverberator, which is part of the TAP-plugins LADSPA plugin set. This
means that the two programs/plugins perform the same audio processing, but they
have some advantages over each other:

* TAP Reverberator is a LADSPA plugin. It has limited capabilities with regard
to the user interface (besides global plugin parameters, only the Reverb Type
can be choosed; changing any internal parameter is not possible).
On the other hand, it can be automated when used in powerful host programs
  such as Ardour.

* TAP Reverb Editor is a separate JACK application. It has its own special user
interface that allows for changing any internal parameter on-the-fly, as well
as plotting the impulse response of Reverb Types as a visual aid. On the
other hand, it cannot be automated from other programs; its main use is to
allow for developing one's own Reverb Types.

Reverb Types created with this program can be easily 'exported' into the LADSPA
version. (Easily means: you have to copy two files and re-compile TAP-plugins.)
For a detailed description of this process, please refer to the TAP Reverb
Editor user manual.

To get satisfactory results with TAP Reverb Editor, you will need to set your
system up to run JACK well. See <http://jackit.sf.net> for details.

I used to always keep a minidisc recorder in my studio running in a mode where
when you pressed record it wrote the last 10 seconds of audio to the disk and

been able to replace it, so this is a simple jack app to do the same job. It
has the advantage that it never clips and can be wired to any part of the jack
graph.

The idea is that I doodle away with whatever is kicking around in my studio and
when I heard an interesting noise, I'd press record and capture it, without
having to try and recreate it. :)

I've been using it to record occasional bursts of interesting noise from jack
apps feeding back into each other. It seems to be stable for me, but there
could be threading issues and race condidtions if run without SCHED_FIFO
(ie. without jackd -R).

Tune-It is a very simple command-line based instrument tuner for Linux.

It uses two different algorithms for pitch detection. By default, a simple and
fast Schmitt Trigger based algorithm is used to detect the fundamental
frequency of an instrument. For better and more reliable results, there is an
alternative FFT based algorithm which is much more CPU intensive.

As audio capture backends ALSA and JACK are supported. By default, tuneit will
try to use the hw:0,0 ALSA device.

What is a VST Plug-In?

In the widest possible sense a VST Plug-In is an audio process. A VST Plug-In
is not an application. It needs a host application that handles the audio
streams and makes use of the process the VST Plug-In supplies.

Generally speaking, it can take a stream of audio data, apply a process to the
audio and send the result back the host application. A VST Plug-In performs its
process normally using the processor of the computer, it does not necessarily
need dedicated digital signal processors. The audio stream is broken down into
a series of blocks. The host supplies the blocks in sequence. The host and its
current environment control the block-size. The VST Plug-In maintains all
parameters statuses that refer to the running process: The host does not
maintain any information about what the Plug-In did with the last block of data
it processed.

From the host application?s point of view, a VST Plug-In is a black box with an
arbitrary number of inputs, outputs (Midi or Audio), and associated parameters.
The Host needs no knowledge of the Plug-In process to be able to use it.

The Plug-In process can use whatever parameters it wishes, internally to the
process, but it can choose to allow the changes to user parameters to be
automated by the host, if the host application wishes to do so.
