Please pardon any duplication. I have two general questions concerning WSDs for languages written in cuneiform script: 1. Are there any present efforts to create WSDs (Writing System Declarations) that conform to the guidelines in TEI P2, Chapter WD (Draft Version 2, September 20, 1993) for any of the languages found in Labat's *Manuel dEpigraphie Akkadiene? 2. Would anyone reading this message be interested in forming an ad hoc group for the purpose of creating such WSDs? I am interested in the use of SGML generally and the TEI WSD specifically for the purpose of encoding cuneiform texts into electronic format for analysis/publication. I would like to see a WSD that allows the encoding of each sign read in the text and not the reader's evaluation of the value of that sign. The value of the sign would be associated with the sign, but that would be a separate matter that could be altered while retaining reference to the actual sign in the text. One would hope for a degree of cooperation/coordination in the creation of such WSDs to avoid conflicts of entity names and to standardize the use of notes and references. The avoidance of entity name conflicts would facilitate comparative analysis and the encoding of loan words or archaic forms. Please reply to pdurusau@crl.com and the list where you read this message. I will summarize all replies and cross-post that summary for the benefit of those who are only on one of these lists. I am chairman of the relevant technical group. Please would anyone wanting to cooperate on this work contact me directly. Next week I hope to put a number of new and revised wsd's in accord with P2 for the 8859 character set series, IPA and classical Greek on our normal ftp sites. I'll send an announcement when they are available. The texts will be tagged for rhetorical as well as stylometric analysis. Two quick questions: 1. Does anyone have experience from use of Writing System Declarations for Arabic, and software for handling the relevant character sets? 2. Does anyone have experience using the TEI Guidelines for tagging of similar material for similar purposes? Help, hints or references would be much appreciated.
