But while just about everyone agrees on that principle, more than a dozen overlapping, conflicting and complementary approaches are competing for acceptance... When publishing for larger groups, ... in which the available tools on each end-user PC are unknown, representation of the contextual structure of the document content is a more pressing question than linking elements to tools. Here, the leader is SGML.... At the symbolic level, SGML/HyTime competes with several approaches born on the Internet. On the World Wide Web (WWW), an Internet service for linking documents that's growing at a rate of 40 percent per month, the document standard of choice is the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML).... Presumably, HTML usage is growing at the same spectacular rate as WWW, but it's difficult to pin down because the tools to build HTML documents are almost all freeware....
